Nellie’s Bagel Deli in Bowling Green, Ohio Social Media Connecting In Action

nellisdeli-facebookAs a tradition, some friends and I meet every Saturday afternoon for lunch.  One weekend we had the pleasure of meeting at Nellie’s Bagel & Deli Ice Cream Pub located on Main Street in Bowling Green, Ohio. Nellie’s featured delicious bagel sandwiches and a wide array of ice creams and coffees. While waiting in line I noticed signs encouraging patrons to add Nellie’s Deli as a friend on Facebook. Nellie’s Deli is in the middle of a college town whose main audience is college students, Facebook makes a logical sense for a place to advertise, but how effective is this marketing effort? Do people join just to befriend an old woman or do they engage with the business and visit the restaurant more frequently?

As of this morning Nellie’s Bagel Deli has almost 450 friends on Facebook. (I have about 200 friends on Facebook. I would be jealous if I login on to Facebook more than once a week.)  Nellie’s Deli uses Facebook as a way to interact with their customers, advertise weekly specials, promote interest in Nellie, communicate new items and promotions and unveil the “secret password.” In my brief conversation with Deb, the owner, she mentioned that frequently people from out of town will sometimes call in just to say the “secret password”. What are Deb and the gang at Nellie’s Deli doing on Facebook? Creating buzz!

I’m planning on having lunch at Nellie’s Bagel Deli this weekend. Tweet me or add me to Facebook if you’re interesting in meeting up. @jamesbake
